Fifty miles due west of Cabo Rojo floats rugged Mona Island, the Galápagos of the Caribbean, with its 200-foot cliffs, 3-foot iguanas and pirate caves. To get to Mona, you make arrangements with one of the tour operators. Established in 1900, deactivated in 1976. The ruins may be found in the southeast corner of the Island. Steel structure designed by Alexendre-Gustave Eiffel, listed on the National Historic Register.
These beaches (such as Sardinera, Pájaros and Mujeres) are spectacular. They run along the southwest, up the west coast and to the start of the cliff just east of the fishing encampment.
